Polk Monitor 40 Series II

The Polk Monitor 40 Series II's -- perfect entry-level speakers for the budding audiophile.

At first glance, the Polk Monitor 40 Series II bookshelf speakers probably seem like your average bookshelf speakers.  At second glance, the Monitor 40 Series II’s are quite possibly the best speakers for their price point.

The pristine clarity of sound,  as well as the elegant design, practical versatility, and ease of customization are what make these speakers such an incredible buy.  We recently saw a deal on NewEgg that put these babies at less than $200.  Obviously we could not pass that kind of deal up, and I have to say, after setting the up and hearing the quality of the speakers, I would have gladly paid three times as much.

Right now the speakers are hooked up to a Sony STR-DH510 A/V receiver, and I am using the speakers as my front left and front right speakers.  I use the to watch movies and tv, play video games, and most of all: listen to music. From a visual entertainment perspective, the speakers haul ass.  They can withstand the buzz and hum of intense car chases, but also manage the shrieking screams and violins of a horror movie’s score.  I have yet to feel anything but fully immersed in dynamic aural ambience the speakers consistently create.

As far as music is concerned, I have blasted everything from Chopin, Coltrane, and Carey (Mariah), and there is nothing the speakers can’t handle.  I think in particular it manages the small ensemble sound of a jazz quintet quite well.  Unfortunately I have yet to experiment with a vinyl setup yet, but that is in the works!
